The Ties that Bind

Honor had been in Faerie the last few days while she and Ethan tried to track down her family. As much as she’d wanted to, she knew that you didn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, especially when it was from Faerie and had no real strings attached to it. Their search had come to a slight pause however when the Queen had summoned Ethan to the Palace and told him to bring his guest along. It’d startled Honor that the Queen had known she was here, but Ethan wasn’t surprised. It was just how the Queen worked, and how connected she was to her land.
Her hand twitched, running along the light, airy fabric of the dress she wore. It was beautiful and cut in the style most women in Faerie wore, which meant it stopped in petals of fabric at the knee and was cut to show off a decent amount of chest. It made her feel just a little exposed, all in all, but she wasn’t going to argue.
“You remember what I told you?” Ethan watched her as they stopped in front of a set of double doors.
She nodded, “I remember everything.” She didn’t sound exceedingly happy about it, but she wasn’t arguing it. He’d essentially told her to stay a couple steps behind him, to drop to one knee and not rise until given permission, and to only speak when spoken to. All rules she didn’t particularly agree with, but far be it from her to argue when she was a guest in the land.
He nodded, seemingly fine with her answer and walked to the doors, which opened for him. The both walked in and dropped to one knee before the Queen, head bowed in respect until she waved a hand and told them to rise.
The Queen held a rather long conversation with Ethan regarding something to do with a trade route. Honor, bored and not allowed to actually go anywhere, flitted her gaze from here to there around the room. It was a lovely hall, all marble and wood and gold trimming. It held four guards, two at the doors and two behind the Queen and a couple servants milling about.
The room also held a dark, Asian looking man that paced a little to the right and behind her throne. He seemed to be having a small conversation with someone she couldn’t see, though it ended abruptly and he moved to lean lazily against the wall to the right of the Queen. His dark eyes passed over the room and lingered on her in a way that made her shiver. His mouth quirked just slightly with an almost wicked edge to it and he tilted his head in silent acknowledgement.
Honor couldn’t help but let her mouth quirk lightly. She wanted to tilt her head back, but she knew moving would draw attention to her, even such a small one, and she didn’t really want the Queen’s attention on her any longer than need be. She couldn’t however seem to take her eyes off the dark man as Ethan and the Queen talked, he piqued her curiosity strongly. Her concentration on him caused her to jump slightly when Ethan nudged her arm, her head whipping to blink at him.
“The Queen asked how you’re stay in Faerie has been, my dear Honor,” he murmured with a dark glare at the man that held her interest.
She blushed slightly as she smiled at the Queen. “It’s well. Ethan is a wonderful host and I’ve found everything absolutely beautiful.”
“I’m always glad when people find my land beautiful.” She turned back to Ethan, Honor completely dismissed. “I look forward to hearing back about our arrangements, Ethan.”
Ethan bowed low, “Of course, my Queen. As soon as I can get word to you.”
The Queen nodded and waved her hand in dismissal, done with them now. Honor followed Ethan’s example of bowing and turning on heel to leave. She’d spared a glance back to where the man had been, a little shocked to find him gone. She doesn’t have much time to think on it though, because Ethan is shuffling her from the room.
Just outside the doors, the dark haired Fae leaned against the wall. Lips quirked with that ever wicked edge to them, he waited until they passed to reach a hand out and spin Honor in a way that landed her pinned between him and the wall with his body. “I haven’t seen you in Faerie before.”
Honor blinked, heart racing and she didn’t know why. Just being this close set something off inside her, something that said he wasn’t close enough and that scared her just a little. “I was just visiting, won’t be too long before I go home…”
Ethan reached for Honor’s shoulder, only to be cut off by the dark haired man’s hand set against the wall as a barrier. “She’s none of your concern, Alex,” he said darkly, not tempting to breach the physical barrier that was being put between him and his charge.
“Quite the contrary, she’s oddly of special concern to me and I’m curious as to how that is.” Dark eyes flicker to Ethan, sharp and dangerous before they land on Honor and take her in slowly.
“What special concern?” Ethan all but demanded when Honor said nothing. He watched her, saw that entranced light in her eyes that said she was way too distracted to actually answer.
“There’s a bond, and I really don’t remember forming one with anyone.” Before Ethan could ask what Alex was talking about, Alex’s hand trailed along Honor’s cheek and jaw which in turn made her eyes flutter closed with a soft sound. She reacted like he was touching something a little more intimate and he felt like he was too.
Honor panted softly as his hand trailed down her throat and along her collarbone, body arching into his touch like she’d always had it, always craved it. “Please…” She begged, asking for something she wasn’t sure of.
Ethan reached out, grabbing Alex’s wrist before it could trail any lower with a low growl. “Enough, Alex. Your point has been made.” He’d wondered about this when she couldn’t seem to take her eyes off him in the throne room, but was hoping it was just idle fascination with all things new in Faerie.
A flare of power pulled a soft whine from Honor’s throat and a hiss from Ethan, though his hand didn’t let go of Alex’s wrist. “I’d take your hand off me if you want to keep it Ethan.” When the man didn’t move, Alex pushed another flare of power through his hand and watched as Honor arched off the wall with a soft cry and Ethan pulled his hand back with a growl.
Honor’s eyes fluttered as Alex cupped her face gently between his hands. She watched him through half lashes, eyes dark with a want of uncertain origins. She’d never felt this way, this unadulterated need to be with someone or she’d die from lack of them. “What…why…” She was having trouble even thinking past the feel of him, let alone making coherent sentences.
“I’ll explain everything, little one, but you have to come with me,” Alex murmured as he leaned down to kiss her lightly. He kept her face cradled between his hands so she couldn’t deepen the kiss the way she tried to.
“Anywhere,” she murmured softly. A part of her knew this was dangerous, agreeing to this, but everything else in her said to follow this Alex to the ends of the world. Willingly.
“No,” Ethan growled, moving to separate the two.
Alex moved, graceful, quick, and with Honor tucked into his side. “You know how this works, Ethan. Once recognized, the bond must be properly settled fully or there will be pain on both sides.”
Honor herself shivered slightly at the feel of him against the length of her body. She pressed closer into his side as her arms wrapped around his waist and her fingers slipped under his shirt to touch skin. She was rewarded with a shiver from him and a very soft groan. Being this close to him, touching him this much seemed to both stroke that fire within her and settle her head at the same time. “What bond?”
“Fae aren’t usually monogamous by nature. We flit from one beautiful and entertaining partner to another and if those unions happen to bare children all the better. Every once in a while though, two Fae will find themselves in a bond, one that has been said to feel like their very souls are intertwined. These two Fae will only ever be with each other, and their children are always strong, powerful, and healthy. Like it’s the Goddess’s way of telling us that these two were meant to be together,” Ethan explained as he glared at Alex as if he’d stolen something special.
“How do you settle the bond?” Honor asked as she watched the two men glare at each other.
Alex’s hand slid down from her waist to her hip, earning a soft sound. “You already know that, Honor. Don’t pretend to not. You may be innocent to Faerie, but your blood and body already give you the answer you seek.”
Honor’s head tilted up, looking at Alex with a darkened look. “What happens if we don’t settle the bond?” Her tone said it already wasn’t an option, just that she was curious.
Alex looked down at her and kissed her softly before he turned to look at Ethan with an expectant look.
“You’ll both whither slowly until you either settle the bond or die. Once a bond is recognized, there’s no ignoring it,” he growled out. His hand rose, pointing a finger at Alex. “I want her back in two days so we can continue trying to find her father.”
Alex’s brow rose at Ethan and the demand. “You’ll have her back when she wants to come back, and after we’re settled don’t be surprised if I’m with her.” Bonded didn’t usually travel far from each other, so it would be interesting to see how this worked out.
Ethan grumbled something before turning on his heel and stalking away as the pair turned and headed to Alex’s room to settle their bond into place.
